FGS is a nonprofit educational organization that promotes public policies, community actions, economic activities, and lifestyles that are socially responsible, protect the beauty and diversity of our natural environment, and are in harmony with the ecosystem processes that make up Earth's life support systems.
FGS educates and encourages citizens to become activists for holistic sustainable decisionmaking, best practices, and good resource stewardship in their family, community, and place of work. FGS has been a coalition builder and incubator for new environmental initiatives, several of which have led to the formation of independent nonprofit organizations.
FGS publishes the Hellbender Press, a free bimonthly journal, distributed in East Tennessee and western North Carolina, which monitors and addresses social and environmental issues in the Upper Tennessee Valley and the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
